Four hotels

Ice Hotels

The four properties in this section stand in Finnish Lapland, and each works with glazed cabins facing the northern sky. Winter sites are rebuilt or reopened each season, so the standing structures differ from year to year. The entries follow what the operators publish. Nothing here promises northern lights, weather or clear sky on any date.

Arctic TreeHouse Hotel

Rovaniemi, Finland

Arctic TreeHouse Hotel is built on a wooded slope near the Arctic Circle outside Rovaniemi, where individual cabins stand on posts among the pines. Each cabin is glazed at one end and faces north across the trees. The property runs through the year rather than in winter alone, and a restaurant building sits at the centre of the site.

The setting

The hotel occupies rising ground beside SantaPark, with Santa Claus Village a walk away and the airport and the city a short drive off. Pines and low ground cover surround the cabins, and boardwalks connect them. Because the cabins are raised on posts, the outlook runs over the tree line rather than into it.

Inside

Cabins hold a bed set toward the glazed wall, a bathroom and a small sitting area, while larger suites add saunas and separate rooms. The main building carries reception and a restaurant serving the whole site. Paths between the buildings are outdoors, so guests cross open ground to reach meals and to return.

Notes

Darkness and daylight change sharply through the year, which alters what the glazed wall shows. Aurora sightings cannot be promised on any date. Cabin types differ in size and facilities, so check which one a booking covers, and allow for walking outdoors between buildings.

Star Arctic Hotel

Saariselkä, Finland

Star Arctic Hotel stands on the Kaunispää fell above Saariselkä in northern Finland, at the top of the road that climbs from the village. The main building holds suites with wide windows, and separate glass-roofed cabins are placed on the slope below it. The height of the site gives an open outlook across the surrounding fells.

The setting

The fell top is bare above the tree line, with low vegetation and exposed ground, while forest covers the slopes below. Saariselkä village lies at the foot of the road, with shops, restaurants and ski runs. Weather on the top changes quickly, and the wind blows harder there than down in the village.

Inside

Suites in the main house face out through large windows, and some include a private sauna. The glass-roofed cabins on the slope are reached on foot from the main building. A restaurant and lounge occupy the upper level of the house and are arranged toward the view. Activity bookings are handled at reception.

Notes

The walk between the cabins and the main building crosses open ground, which matters in cold and wind. Northern lights depend on conditions and cannot be guaranteed. Room types differ considerably, so confirm which building a booking refers to before travelling north.

Northern Lights Ranch

Köngäs, Levi, Finland

Northern Lights Ranch is a set of separate cabins in forest at Köngäs, north of the Levi ski resort in Finnish Lapland. Each cabin stands apart from its neighbours and carries a heated glass roof and wide windows over the bed. A central building holds reception and a restaurant, and the surrounding land is open for walking.

The setting

Cabins are spread across cleared ground and light forest, with the Ounasjoki valley nearby and fells in the distance. Levi lies a drive to the south and the Kittilä airport a similar distance to the west. No village stands immediately around the site, and outdoor lighting is kept low so the sky stays dark.

Inside

Cabins hold beds facing the glazed roof, an ensuite bathroom and, in most cases, an outdoor hot tub on the terrace. The restaurant in the main building serves guests through the day. Husky and reindeer visits, snowshoeing and aurora outings are arranged from reception during the winter season.

Notes

Aurora activity depends on the weather and cannot be promised for any given night. Cabin facilities differ, so check whether a hot tub is included. The site sits away from shops and restaurants, which makes meals and transport worth settling in advance.

Aurora Village Ivalo

Ivalo, Finland

Aurora Village Ivalo is a group of glass-roofed cabins on a hillside outside Ivalo in northern Finland, a short drive from the village and the airport. Cabins are placed apart on the slope so that each looks out without facing another. Reindeer are kept on the site, and a central building carries reception and dining.

The setting

The slope faces open ground and forest, with the Ivalo river valley below and low fells around it. Ivalo village and its shops lie minutes away by road, and the airport is close enough that transfers are short. Outdoor lighting across the site is kept dim so that the sky overhead stays dark.

Inside

Each cabin holds a bed under the glazed roof, a bathroom and a small seating area, and larger suites and a tower building were added later. The main house serves meals and handles activity bookings. Snowmobile and aurora outings start from the site itself rather than from the village down the road.

Notes

The sky and the season decide what is visible, and northern lights cannot be promised. The layout on the slope means walking outdoors between the cabins and the main building. Accommodation types differ, so confirm which one a booking covers before arrival.

Please note

Tavireo is an independent reference and has no link to these operators. Winter properties are assembled again each season, so cabin types, facilities and opening dates change from year to year. The site sells nothing and takes no bookings. Sky conditions cannot be promised. Check the current season with the operator before travelling.
