Where the eighteen hotels sit

Capsule Hotels

Four houses where the sleeping unit is a capsule or a compact cabin and the rest of the plan is shared. Two stand in city centres, one in an airport terminal, one on a narrow central street. Each entry says what is shared and what is not.

Art Hotels

Six houses where the building itself carries the interest: a former seminary, a former limestone works, a house on a rock terrace, an estate with working gardens. The entries describe what stands there now and how the ground around it is used.

Casino Hotels

Four Canadian complexes described here as hotels and resorts: theatres, restaurants, spas and the ground they stand on. The gaming floor is outside the scope of this guide and is not described anywhere on the site.

Ice Hotels

Four winter properties in Finnish Lapland where the sleeping unit is a glazed cabin, a raised hut or a glass-roofed igloo. Standing structures vary by season, so each entry keeps to what the operator publishes for the current one.

How we write these entries

Every entry follows the same order, so the pages can be read against one another. We describe the building, the ground it stands on and the parts that are shared, and we say plainly when a house is one address of a larger group rather than a single property.

We keep to what operators and published sources state. Where a fact could not be confirmed, the sentence is rewritten rather than guessed at. Nothing here is scored or ranked, and no entry promises weather, availability or what a stay will feel like.

In every entry
  • A short opening paragraph on what the place is and where it stands.
  • The setting: the ground around the building and what it faces.
  • Inside: the shared parts and how they are arranged.
  • Notes: quiet practical points, with the month the entry was checked.
